Exxon Mobil human rights abuses in Aceh, Indonesia

Since 1971, when one of the largest natural gas fields in the world was discovered in Aceh, Exxon Mobil has been granted by the government of Indonesia the exclusive rights to explore and extract natural gas in the area.

Exxon Mobil has been sued by the International Labor Rights Fund (ILRF), on behalf of 11 villagers in Aceh, a province in western Indonesia. The corporation is accused of being complicit in the human rights abuses committed by the notorious Indonesian military forces guarding the area (ΤΝΙ). Villagers in the area have been victims of murder, torture, kidnapping and rape.

ExxonMobil’s part in these atrocities is claimed to have been supplying barracks used by the military to torture prisoners and machinery like excavators that used to dig mass graves.
