PARENTS ASSOCIATION OF THE CHILDREN IN HIGH SCHOOL OF ITHACA, SAYS NO TO OIL DRILLING
The in progress plan of research and oil drilling in our territory, in the Sea of mythical Odysseus, the Ionian Sea, carries a huge, irreversible ecological, social and financial disaster.
Oil drilling will downgrade the environment, both marine and inland, causing downgrading of tourism, farming, fishing and other financial activities of the territory.
The citizens, the society and the economy of the region have nothing to win, only to loose. For the citizens, petrol and natural gas will remain expensive, as prices are being fixed by international stock markets. The only ones to get profit from oil drilling will be the oil drilling companies, who are about to get complete control of all the drilling procedure phases (seismic research, drilling, pumping facilities, commercial exploitation, even management of pollution, leaks and accidents)
International experience has proven that if oil drilling takes place in a marine area, accidents are unavoidable. So much when the specific marine area is the most active seismic area of Europe, making the certainty of an accident self-evident, with all the consequences that come with it, not only for the environment and financial activity, but our very health and life.
We, the parents of Ithaca, have the obligation, towards our children and the generations to come, to oppose this plan of oil research and drilling in the Ionian sea area, which will dramatically downgrade the quality of our life and of the environment of our island and the wider area. So we emphatically say a big NO TO OIL RESEARCH AND DRILLING IN IONIAN SEA.
